Through Our Golden Hour‘s Oral History Project, we preserve ancient folk tales, retelling them in illustrated picture books. These picture books, in English and an indigenous language from the Chittagong Hill Tracts, are among the only books for these children in their native languages. The books are used in schools and serve as a basis for curriculum used in the school.
We want every child in the Hill Tracts to have books at home, with beautiful illustrations, written in their native language, and referencing their culture. These books are central in helping children love reading and learning, which are the keys to their long-term success–and even survival. The books help children value their own culture, which is otherwise excluded from text books and the history, which are written by majority populations.
It is easy for you to help children have books in their home–every book you purchase through Our Golden Hour gives a book to a child in the Hill Tracts. Please visit our shop to help!
Our Golden Hour has a long list of book projects underway.
Books Published and Soon to be Published
We have published three books so far, which retell ancient stories and are beautifully illustrated with the help of artists around the world.
Princess Monori, our most recent books, tells the story of a winged Princess, daughter of the gods, who travels to earth and finds adventure and love with an earthly prince. She talks with dragons and meets many people of earth, while traveling across a beautiful and unfamiliar jungle countryside. This is the most well-known story of the Chittagong Hill Tracts–a little like the English story of Cinderella.
The Leaf from Heaven and The Gift of Water and reveal the origin stories behind a a medicinal plant used in the Hill Tracts and a tradition of providing water to traveling strangers. The stories always involve adventure and sometimes demon-filled magical nets, and flying horses!
The Voice of the Trees: An Anthology of Ancient Tales of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh. This collection of stories is published in English, as a fundraising project. We hope to help children around the world become familiar with the beautiful stories from the Hill Tracts.
The Legend of Dragon Lake. This story tells the origin of a beautiful lake in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, with brave hunters, charging tigers, and dragons. The book is beautifully illustrated by Maung Kyaw Sing, a native of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region. It will be published in both Marma and English.
The Crocodile and the Fox. This story is illustrated by Euija Kim, with beautiful, rich colors and dramatic characters that help to bring the story alive. The story will be published in both English and Marma.
